New Iranian Fiber Art

One of the most rewarding aspects of curating last May’s exhibit, (Re)Fashioning Fiber at Greenspaces NY, was the joyful weaving together of a diverse roster of artists and designers from all corners of the globe. This summer long exhibition showcased the fiber work of celebrated American and Canadian artists, as well invited NYC-based sustainable fashion designers Tara St. James of Study NY, Eko-Lab’s Xing-Zhen Chung-Hilyard and Melissa Kirgam, ‘Fearless Dreamer’ Meiling Chen, and Kaori Yamazaki of Organic Shop.

I was fortunate, through my connections with Greenmuseum to be in touch with two outstanding fiber artists from the Iranian New Art group, a collective of Iranian artists and students who use recycled and natural (typically fiber) materials to draw attention to the ecological and social issues of their homeland. Atefeh Khas and Tara Goodarzy had never shown their work in the U.S. before, and I felt that it was vital to introduce their installation and sculptural projects to a broader audience as a means to illustrate what connects and allies us as environmentally conscious artists.

Both Atefeh and Tara have been actively involved with recent environmental festivals organized by the Paradise Art Center in Polour, Iran, a residency retreat center founded by environmental sculptor, Dr. Ahmad Nadalian, a friend and collaborator of mine.

Their projects to date have included crocheted wool and spun fiber installed as webbing in vacant Persian interiors, dense forests, and as organically generated diagrams on remote island coasts and desert salt flats. These site-specific creations seem to transcend the boundaries of ‘women’s work’ with their haunting outlines and schemes for ethereal but very convincing activism.

 

One of the interactive projects that Atefeh and Tara shared with (Re)Fashioning Fiber visitors was a care package of hand-crocheted fiber ‘peace bracelets’ made by women in Iran. Given that the artists were not in attendance at the opening, this was a very real way of sharing the language of fiber and borderless relations in a conversation-generating manner. It was great to see folks at the opening wearing these bracelets while viewing the exhibit and sharing their ideas about fiber, textiles, and the state of the environment.

Equally engaging is Iranian New Art’s Seventy Thousands Curtains project, based on the discovery of light-filled and bejeweled curtains during prophet Mohammad’s ascension to heaven. This site-specific textile performance was created on the hills of Hormoz Island in Iran. Each printed textile curtain or scrim is held up to the light by a female student from the local secondary school.

Seventy Thousand Curtains_Collaborative Work by New Art Group

 

در شب معراج، در آن سوي آسمان، در فضاي لايتناهي، حضرت محمد(ص) هفتاد هزار پرده را مي‌بيند كه از نور،ياقوت آتشين،سنبل،مرواريد وطلا ساخته شده است.هر يك از پرده‌ها،توسط هفت گروه از موجودات فرشته‌گونه نگهباني مي‌شود.پيامبر به وسيله‌ي فرشتگان راهنما از بين اين هفتاد هزار پرده با موفقيت مي‌گذرد و عرش الهي را كه از سنبل قرمز ساخته شده، مي‌بيند.(از كتاب معراج‌نامه،ماري رز سگاي) 
پيامبر (ص)وقتي به هفتمين آسمان رسيد، حجاب‌هايي از نور مشاهده كرد و در آن جهان سراسر نور و روشنايي به اوج شهود باطني و قرب‌الي‌الله رسيد.(ناصر مكارم شيرازي،تفسير نمونه،جلد بيست و دوم) 

فضاي زيبا و كوه‌هاي رنگارنگ جزيره هرمز، تصويري از بهشت را در ذهن تداعي مي‌كند. گروه هنر جديد با همكاري آموزش و پرورش و اداره ارشاد جزيره هرمز، به همراه هفتاد دانش‌آموز دختر مدرسه راهنمايي هاجر، صحنه‌اي از معراج‌نامه را كه در دوره هرات به تصوير كشيده شده بود، به اجرا درآوردند. 

 دختران لباس‌هاي زيباي محلي به تن داشتند و در هر اجرا، چادرهاي رنگين ‌شان را در مقابل خود به نشاني از پرده نگاه مي‌داشتند.هركدام‌شان فرشته‌اي بودند در پس پرده‌ها.
براي اجراي اين كار- با توجه به زمان كوتاهي كه در اختيار داشتيم - به هماهنگي زيادي احتياج بود ، كه مسولان مدرسه از هيچ كمكي دريغ نكردند، از همگي آن‌ها تشكر مي‌كنيم.براي به ثمر رسيدن اين كار ، عاطفه، شهرناز، محمود، تارا،سامان لطفيان وعاطفه متحيري در كنار هم تلاش كردند.
هفتاد هزار پرده -گروه هنر جديد

In ascention to heaven, in infinite space, prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) finds seventy thousand curtains made up of light, rubies, ringlets, pearls and gold. Each one of curtains are guarded by seven sets of angle-like creatures.

Prophet goes through these seventy thousand curtains accompanied by guidance angles and finds up heaven ornamented by scarlet ringlets (Book of Ascention by Mary Rose Segay).

When he arrived in seventh sky, he saw veils of light, in the brightness world of which reached the climax of intuition and closeness to God (reverence for God). (Tafsir Nemoneh by Naser Makarem Shirazi, Volume twenty two)

Beautiful landscapes and colorful hills of Hormoz Island depicts and image of paradise. New Art Group performed a scene from Book of Ascention related to Herat era by cooperation of Hormoz Ministry of Education and Guidance with seventy girls students of Hajar Secondary School.

Girls wore nice costumes and kept their colored veils(Chadoor) in front of their face as a sign of curtain in each performance. Each of them was angles behind curtains. Regarding the short time we had for this performance, coordination with heads of school was required, that we were not deprived of. We are grateful to them. Atefeh, Shahrnaz, Mahmood, Tara, Saman Lotfian and Atefeh Motehayer Arani made efforts together to work out.

Circle of Fire_Collaborative Work by New Art Group

بازي با آتش (در ميان حلقه نور)
با كمك هنرمندان حاضر در جشنواره و تعدادي از جوانان جزيره هرمز و آقاي دريا پيما(هنرمنداهل جزيره ، آشنا با موسيقي و پرفرمنس) ، با20 آتش‌گرداني كه از قبل تهيه كرده بوديم ، اجرايي را همراه با موسيقي ترتيب داديم. و در پايان آتش‌گردان‌ها را به عنوان يادگاري از اين شب ، به دوستان‌مان هديه داديم.
اول بار در تهران با 4 آتش گردان و براي مراسم چهارشنبه سوري ، همانند اين مراسم را با حضور محمود، شهرناز، زهرا ، تارا و مينوش ارائه داديم وبعد از آن بارها در مكان‌هاي مختلف ارائه‌هاي متفاوتي از آن داشتيم. 

We arranged a musical performance with twenty Atash Gardan ( a device for rotating firy coal) prepared by the assistance of presents artists and Mr. Darya Peima (familiar with music and performance). At the end, we gifted Atash Gardan to our friends. We, Mahmood, Sharhrnaz, Tara, Minoosh Zahra, performed it for the first time in Tehran with four Atash Gardan on the last Wednesday befor Nowrooz (Charshanbe Soori) and later in different places in different forms.

Three nights of the festival were allocated to a seminar whose subject was Relationship between Economy and Environmental Art. Atefeh Khas, Mahmood  Maktabi, Mahrab Ghayemimanesh, Ehsan Ratebi, Tara Goodarzi and Nooshin Nafici presented speech, translation, artist introduction and film.

انعکاس و نور برای من همیشه جذاب بوده است.

برای من انعکاس یعنی معنایی از دیده شدن و نور یعنی عامل این دیده شدنِ

حال این که دیده شدن بازتابی از وجود است.

این نور است که هر گونه زشتی وپلیدی را پاک کرده و زیبایی را انعکاس می دهد.

سنگ ها را به درون آب آرام می انداختیم تا شاید که صدای فریادمان را در این سکوت جان فرسا بشنوند

این اثر کار گروهی ما (گروه هنرجدید) در آخرین جشنواره پلور بود که با همراهی و کمک حسام محمدیان، مهدی متولی و بهزاد نادعلیان انجام شد. صدای سکوت از یک طرف برای ما ادامه یک اثر گروهی بود که پیش از این برای زندانیان سیاسی(البته نه فقط ایرانی‌ها) انجام داده بودیم. اما این کار جدید با آنکه از لحاظ اجرایی بسیار متفاوت از گذشته بود اما صدای این سنگ‌ها برای ما سکوت خاصی را می‌شکست. سکوتی که این بار چندان از فضای ما هم دور نبود. فضایی که دیگر نمی‌شد در آن آرام ماند.

The Sound of Silence was a installation by New Art Group in the first festival of Fajr Afarinan in Saba Complex-Tehran . This work was made from pieces of tree and metal layers that were pendulous , with a special sound

You could find a multimedia space

People could type every things about the work with an old type machin

 The metal layers were symbols of door jail that made a narrow corridor which guided people to a central light in the center work

 We used a sensor. It turned on lights when somebody come in . The Sound of type machin made an anxiety space

روز یکشنبه ۲۴ آذر ماه سال جاری در ادامه نمایشگاه "زبان نو . هنر جدید" که در نگارخانه لاله تهران برگزار شد" احمد نادعلیان " و " گروه هنر جدید" و تعدادی از هنرمندان " هنر محیطی " ایران با موضوع     " هنر بازیافت "  به اجرای آثار خود پرداختند.

The exhibition of " new language , new art " was held in Tehran Lale Gallery in  December , 2008 and " Ahmad Nadalian " and " New art group " and some of Iranian artists "environmental art " performed their art works with subject of Recycle art at  24of Azar ,15 of december

 

 

لباس من / My dress 

من هم در این نمایشگاه لباسی را با بعضی مواد بازیافتی مانند قوطی نوشابه و قوطی پودر ماشین لباس شویی تزیین کردم.

I decorated a dress with recycle materials like bottle of colla or packed of machin powder

سعی کردم که تریینات لباسم شبیه گل آرایی لباسهای زنانه باشد و برای من این تناقض که لباسی زنانه با تزییناتی که قیمتی نیستند و تنها با مواد بازیافتی درست شده اند زیبا بود.در طول نمایشگاه این لباس را بر تن داشتم.

I tried my dress decoration look aliked to women's clothing floral arrangement.        To me , this contradiction about women's clothing with cheap  decoration was beautiful that made only with recycle meterials

حجمی از آلودگی / Mass of pullotion

 حجمی از آلودگی که کار گروه هنر جدید بود.این اثر تماماً با بطری های پلاستیکی درست شده که می توان تعداد زیادی از آنها را در همه جا پیدا کرد و حالا من و دوستانم به آن جلوه زیبایی داده ایم.

Mass of pullotion by new art group.This work compeletly made from plastic bottles that you can find lots of them in every where and now my friend and I (new art group) showed it to you in beautiful way

شهرناز با ظرافت تمام با بطری های نوشابه جاشمعی هایی را درست کرد که به فضای نمایشگاه زیبایی زیادی داده بود.

Shahrnaz made from colla bottles some candlesticks with full elegance.The space of exhibition was beautiful with them

 

تارا و محمود اجرایی با عنوان درد مشترک داشتند.تارا نخ می بافت و محمود سیم خاردار

Tara and Mahmood had a performance with title of joint ache.Tara was weaving knitfing yarn and Mahmood was weaving barbed wire

حسام هم اجرای صدا داشت که توانست تعامل خوبی با مخاطبان برقرار کند.

Hesam had a Audio art.His work had good relationship with visitors

 

دکتر احمد نادعلیان نیز ویدیو آرتی را که در زمینه هنر بازیافت ساخته بود به نمایش گذاشت.در این ویدیو تصاویری از گزارش های آثار خود هنرمند در روزنامه ها در کنار ماهی های مرده و یا آشغال به نمایش گذاشته بود.

Ahmad Nadalian showed his video art about recycle art.This video included photos of his works in newspaper beside the dead fish or rubish

 

در پایان نمایشگاه هم بحث و گفتگویی آزاد میان مخاطبان و بعضی هنرمندان انجام شد.

At the end of exhibition did a discussion between some artists and visitors

Wig / کلاه گیس

یکی از آثار من در نوزدهمین جشنواره هنر محیطی با عنوان کلاه گیس بود.

استاد نادعلیان در ادامه پروژه خود بر روی صورت من با خاک سرخ هرمز نقاشی کرد.

او بر روی صورت من یک مار نقاشی کرد که نمادی از زن است

و من نیز با استفاده از بافته های رنگینی که خود بافته بودم

کلاه گیسی درست کردم و به جای موهای خودم گذاشتم.

Nadalian painted on my face in during of his project with Hormoz red soil

He painted a snack on my facethat it's the symbol of woman 

and

I made a wig with colorful wovens that I had weaved my own

and

نوردهمین جشنواره هنر محیطی.باغ بهادران اصفهان.آبان 87 /The nineteenth environmental art festival

نوردهمین جشنواره هنر محیطی به دعوت انجمن هنرمندان نقاش اصفهان در منطقه باغ بهادران اصفهان در روزهای ۷ تا ۱۰ آبان برگزار شد.در این جشنواره استاد نادعلیان و تعدادی ار هنرمندان شهرهای مختلف ایران حضور داشتند.

در این جشنواره به نقوش صنایع دستی اصفهان توجه شده و اکثر آثار با الهام از این نقوش و با استفاده از مواد طبیعی مانند برگ های رنگارنگ پاییزی و چوب درختان و ... انجام شد.

من و دوستانم(تارا گودرزی ـ راحله زمردی نیا ـ شهرناز زرکش ـ زهرا شفیع آبادی) نیز در این جشنواره اثری را خلق کردیم که با توجه به تیکه دوزی های زنانه بود.

The nineteenth environmental art festival  with invitation of Association of Esfahan painter artists was held in Esfahan_Bagh bahadoran area on 28-31 of October

 In this festival D.c Nadalian and lots of artists from different places of Iran attended .In this festival attention was paid to the designs of Esfahan handicrafts.Lots of artworks were done with inspiration from these designs by using nature materials like :fall colored leaves and the wood of trees 

My friends and I (Tara Godarzy _ Raheleh Zomorrodinia _ Sharnaz Zarkesh _ Atefeh  Khas _ Zahra Shafi Abadi) created a work.It was with full attention to women's applique  

 

 برای ما استفاده از عناصر محیطی(برگ های پاییزی) و خلق یک اثر که احساسی از ظرافت بافت این آثار به دست زنان و رنگارنگی آنان مهم بود.

Using environmental elements and creating a work that you can feel tissu elegance of handy work and their colors was important

 

 در این اثر از هیچ ماده ای که به طبیعت آسیب برساند استفاده نشده است.

Reflection / انعکاس

در میان برگ های رنگارنگ پاییزی٬ انعکاسی از برگ و رنگ را دیدم.

چه زیبا بود

پیوستن نور به رنگ برگ های پاییزی .

In  between fall colorful leaves,I saw a reflection Of leaf and colour

It was wonderful

The welding of light to colorful fall leaves

Reflex / انعکاس

در میان برگ های رنگارنگ پاییزی٬ انعکاسی از برگ و رنگ را دیدم.

چه زیبا بود

پیوستن نور به رنگ برگ های پاییزی .
